Explore & Get Involved

The Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust owns 5 properties that are managed for wildlife habitat, open space, and recreational opportunities. Everyone is welcome to explore these beautiful open landscapes and connect with nature.

Please note that our Fee-Title Preserves are subject to seasonal closures. These closures ensure the safety of our community members, and provide refuge to wildlife during critical stages of development and survival.

If you choose to recreate on our public access preserves, please note that the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust is not liable for any accidents or injuries incurred. We encourage everyone to recreate responsibly, exercise caution, and understand the inherent risks that come with recreating in the landscapes of our region. Leave no trace outdoor ethics apply. No fires or explosives are permitted. Motorized access restrictions apply.

Please report emergencies to the appropriate agency (Fire Department, Police Department, etc.) Concerns or questions should be directed to the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust directly.

Community Conservation

Community Conservation is not a new concept, but it is a new endeavor for Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust. In recent years, our great state of Idaho has been experiencing intensified recreational pressure on our landscape. Despite this increased demand, not everyone can interact with nature and their local landscapes in the same ways. Community Conservation brings land protection principles to an urban setting – creating new and accessible opportunities for the community to experience the environment, connect with one another in spaces close to home, and engage in conservation efforts.

Community Conservation depends on the needs of individual communities. It is an approach to land conservation that incorporates the perspectives of all participants rather than a single landowner. By identifying where common interests and values intersect, it is possible to establish a shared identity around place. For example, in Pocatello, the Portneuf River represents such a place-based focal point for the community to establish a unique identity. As part of a collaborative with the Portneuf River Vision, the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust constructed a Community Conservation Program. This is intended to support the education and community engagement components necessary to successfully implement the River Vision and restore Portneuf River health. Since its inception, this program has grown to encompass other Community Conservation projects, including Habitat Haven and the Artist in Residence Program.

Community Conservation seeks to support and provide quality of life benefits to everyone within and throughout the community by creating opportunities to connect with the natural world and one another. This is important because the positive impact of efforts such as the Portneuf River Vision go beyond providing access and recreation. A positive outcome of Community Conservation is an overall enrichment of experience among residents. This has a direct impact in supporting the social structure that makes Pocatello the beautiful and unique place that it is. Even the least ‘outdoorsy’ person benefits from a happy and united community.

The Community Conservation Program promotes a broad and permeating theme of connecting and protecting the places that Pocatellans care about. From trails, viewsheds, and walking paths, to river access, and restoring ecosystem function, our commitment is to engage directly with the community throughout the process of implementation. Just like a river ecosystem, we are stronger and more resilient through diversity. The idea of community-based conservation is more important than ever.

Pocatellans take pride in the beauty and recreation right here in our own backyard and have demonstrated that they are committed to preserving it –not just for themselves but for everyone. Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust is here to help encourage and deliver on that mission for a brighter Pocatello for us all.

A planned gift is a gift you plan today to make a lasting difference in the future to something that is important to you. Depending on the type of gift, you may receive tax benefits or income from your donation. Planned gifts are key to helping the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust make sure that the conservation we do together will endure.

Planned gifts may be as simple as making the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust a beneficiary of your retirement account, or as complicated as setting up a charitable remainder trust. To make sure your planned gift works for you, please consult your tax advisor before making any planned gift.

Planned gifts can reduce your income taxes, your capital gains taxes, your gift or estate taxes, provide income to you and the people you care about, and help ensure that beautiful places in Southeast Idaho are conserved forever.

Types of planned giving include:

CHARITABLE ROLLOVER

If you are 70 and ½ years old or older, your retirement account manager can make a distribution from your IRA directly to the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust without incurring a tax on the withdrawal.

GIFTS OF RETIREMENT PLANS & IRA’S

You can designate the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust as a beneficiary of all or part of the remainder of your IRA or retirement plan. Distributions of your IRA or retirement plan to your heirs may be subject to income and state taxes. By designating the Land Trust as a beneficiary, 100% of the balance can be used by the Land Trust.

BEQUESTS

You can designate that a percentage of your estate, or a specific dollar amount, be donated to the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust.

GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE

You can deed your home, vacation home, ranch, or condominium to the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust. We accept gifts of land with conservation value to be protected and real estate that can be sold to help us protect land throughout Southeast Idaho. If you are considering a gift of land, please consult with us on the appropriate conservation and sales strategy.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES

CGAs provide guaranteed income for life at a fixed amount and the Land Trust received the balance remaining in the annuity account. The minimum gift is $25,000.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS

CRTs can provide market income for life and transfer the remainder of the asset to Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust. Substantial assets in the range of $250,000 are typically needed to establish a CRT.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER

Our volunteers are the heart, mind, and backbone of the organization. We could not do this important conservation work without their dedication and support to habitat and open space protection.

Though volunteering is hard work, it is also a chance to meet new people and spend time outdoors actively working to protect the treasured landscapes of Southeast Idaho.

BECOME A LAND STEWARD

Land stewards help with conservation easement monitoring, habitat restoration projects, archiving photographs, creating property maps, and conduction species and habitat inventories (training opportunities available).

We are seeking:

  • Experience with natural resources and field work in the West
  • Commitment to our monitoring program for at least three years
  • Between May and October, the ability to commit to one day a week to monitor properties in our service area
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn, basic GPS applications to track paths and waypoints

Volunteer With Us!

Volunteers are essential to our conservation efforts. We host volunteer events throughout the year, including stewardship workdays, community cleanups, and tree planting events. We also welcome volunteers to help with events and outreach, such as our annual fundraiser and community events. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the form, and we will be in touch about upcoming opportunities.
